Brennus was born to Canris Falksen and Synnøve Threlldotten, Thane of Ravenflame Hold. Ravenflame Hold calls the Southern-most summits of the Frostback Mountains its home, west of the Frostback Basin itself.

Ravenflame Hold was settled four generations prior by Threlldotten's kin after splitting off from a clan further north. Though Ravenflame Hold does not keep in contact with that particular clan, the hold considers itself on good standing with the other Avvar settlements closest to it, including Stone-Bear Hold in the Basin.

The hold bears its name from the Hold-Beasts that it honors, which are four large black ravens that aided Threlldotten's kin in finding an inhabitable place to establish their hold. Each of the ravens is named according to the winds upon which they flew to find Threlldotten's company wandering the mountains, and are only known to members of the hold. As a collective, the ravens are simply called the Urdorvar.

Brennus was born in the winter, late in the dark of a Firstfall evening. The hold's Augur predicted for Synnøve Threlldotten that her son would be of a leader's stalk. He also predicted that Brennus would be born with a thirst for the fight, and have the strength of Korth in his blows. As the Thane's son grew, it became clear that the Augur's predictions were correct.

Brennus was only eleven years old when the Urdorvar didn't return for many days and nights. Concerned that something had happened to the Hold-Beasts, the Master of the Hunt went forth with a couple of search parties to find them. The search parties were forced to return when a blizzard settled in, with a few of their Hold-Beasts' feathers as their only discovery. Determined to prove himself and save the Urdorvar, young Brennus went out into the snowstorm alone to find them.

To this day, Brennus does not take sole credit for finding the Hold-Beasts, and says that a nameless Avvar warrior, clanless and wandering, helped him track down the Urdorvar by teaching him to read the storms. Many in Ravenflame Hold postulate that Brennus' mysterious mentor was in fact one of the gods that the Augur speaks with. Regardless, the boy returned to Ravenflame Hold with all four of the Urdorvar perched along his arms as he strode through the snow fearlessly. He became apprentice to the Master of the Hunt that very night, and earned the legend-mark of Stormwalker.

In time, Brennus grew and passed the trials and rites that all within Ravenflame Hold must pass to prove their value to the Hold and their worth as warriors, men, and Avvar. Thane Threlldotten could not have been prouder of her son, though it was not his time to replace her as thane. Instead, Brennus took up the title of Master of the Hunt after his mentor's passing.

Whispers came through in the guise of traveling dwarves and traders about turmoil among the lowlanders, and eventually said stories became too great for Thane Threlldotten to ignore. Not trusting any other with such a task, the Thane sent forth her only son north to a settlement called Haven to bring back news of this 'conclave'. When Brennus didn't return, the Hold presumed him dead, and mourned the prodigal son of Ravenflame Hold.
